NYC: Kehinde Wiley’s African Cup of Nations Paintings at Deitch Projects
[Fader]
Celebrated New York artist Kehinde Wiley was commissioned by Puma to create artwork for the brand’s apparel and footwear leading up to the 2010 African Cup of Nations, including crazy t-shirts, shoes that probably are probably too valuable to kick a ball with and an All Africa jersey, all of which you can see in the video after the jump. Or at Wiley’s upcoming three-day show at Deitch Projects, the gallery home of Jeffrey Deitch, who recently accepted the big cheese job at Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art—guess he felt like being bored. Anyway, the exhibit will be on display starting this Thursday, February 18th, and goes through the weekend, so check that out.
The African Cup of Nations concluded on January 31st with the Pharaohs of Egypt defeating Ghana’s spirited Black Stars in the 85th minute with a pretty ridiculous goal in front of 50,000 fans in Luanda, Angola. It was the 7th title for the Egyptians, and a redemptive moment for the team who just a few months ago were denied a spot in the first Africa-hosted World Cup in a heart- and tiebreaking playoff match against Algeria. Ghana, meanwhile, will battle its way through a brutal schedule in South Africa, with group stage matches against Germany, Serbia and Australia, all teams in the top 20 of FIFA’s World Rankings. Good luck to both of them and France who are actually the best team despite barely qualifying and having the worst coach ever. And the United States, we guess, since they’re “our team.”
